Constructing a diabetes registry

Part 1

A + Science was appointed to execute a big part of the project. The forms were developed in consultation with the project team. A + Science handled all mailings, data collection, data entry and database management.

Patients diagnosed with diabetes or suspected of having diabetes were compared against the "Västerbotten Health Survey" database (medical biobank) in search for subjects who left a blood sample. For those patients who submitted a written consent, data were collected from their medical records into the registry. In addition to demographic data, data concerning the criteria for diagnostic determination, family history and current medications were also collected.

Based on the data collected, a diabetes diagnosis was confirmed by two physicians. The data was entered and proof-read and consisted of 146 variables for 1426 patients.

Results
1929 individuals with diabetes diagnosis and provided blood samples were identified. 1527 responded on time (83.7% of consent sent) and the physicians was able to confirm 1426 diabetes diagnosis (74.1% of 1929).

Part 2

A complement to the database of about 1400 newly diagnosed patients are currently being carried out. The project is expected to be completed. This part is performed by A + Science in the same structure as part 1.

Planned Part 3

The same type of project is scheduled to take place in Norrbotten, when required approvals and financial resources are in place. This project will also be handled by A + Science.
